I know, I know, world's most boring title. I was kind of at a loss and that's what I came up with.
First off, we're doing pretty well. We're officially heading home for Christmas (thanks Mom + Dad!) this year so that's marked on the calendar. If anyone's around between December 21 and 28th.... email/facebook me so I can make sure I get to seeee you before I disappear again... Lol. I swear, this is like living in Dar again (okay, it's a lot colder but you know what I mean).
As of tomorrow (the 4th) we've officially lived in YK for a month... wow. Time really does seem to fly sometimes. We've pretty much finished dealing with all the paper work, drivers licences (yeah, that's right, it's plural! I got one too), health insurance, all that other stuff.... all taken care of! I'm starting to feel like this is home which usually takes some time, but I really do think I like it here.

Halloween was fairly uneventful. We were all excited, thinking that we might get a few little spooks because this is a nicer building... no such luck. There was a total of one tiny human, and she knocked on the door before R got home from work. It was a tough night for me- I kept thinking of home, the ladies at the 'bux-of-Star and of course, Sadie. Mum and my darling auntie kept me entertained (if you've ever spent time texting these two at the same time you'll understand what I mean) while we did the sort of things one does on Friday night in YK. What does THAT mean exactly? Well, as it turns out... businesses here run from 9/9:30am to 5:30/6pm Monday through Friday here. Absolutely everything is closed on Sundays, most things are closed on public holidays and only the chain stores and grocery stores are open on Sunday. Grocery stores also have weird hours... they close 3 hours earlier on M-T-W then they do on any other day. It's actually kinda annoying to keep track of. |
We all know how I love to find a bargain... I think I've found the best ones yet. The other day I was flipping through the Brick's flyer and guess what!? Our mattress was on special for less than $800. They happen to have a price guarantee, so that was kind of awesome. We'd hit an awesome sale to begin with but it's always nice when a store gives you back a large portion of what you originally paid. So that was awesome.
The next day I was flipping through YKTrader (like kijiji) and... I found a couch! It's huge. It's brown. It's super comfy. It's a custom La-z-boy from Edmonton ordered 3 years ago by it's former owners.... and $300 later it's sitting in our living room. When we leave we'll get our money back and for now, it's a super comfy place to sit... and the brown looks lovely with the flowers on R's love seat.

Speaking of R, he's got his first real business trip coming up! Three people from his office are going up to Inuvik for a few days next week! |
For anyone who's never heard of Inuvik, Wikipedia says, "Inuvik is located on the East Channel of the Mackenzie Delta, approximately 100 km (62 mi) from the Arctic Ocean and approximately 200 km (120 mi) north of the Arctic Circle." Yeesh.
This, of course, meant some seriously warm boots were required. A quick stop at our local trading post (seriously, that's what they call it) and some giant boots were procured. Dad's parka will be put to good use next week!
Speaking of Dad... I thought about him a lot this week. After I got to actually speak to him on the phone a few tears were shed, I really miss my dad. His birthday was this weekend, I'd wanted to make pecan pie in his honour but pecans are crazy expensive this year. We went up to the Giant Mine housing area to watch some Northern Lights so that'll have to do for now.
Anywho, we're off to catch some rays. Seriously, we're going for a walk so that we can enjoy the sunlight and the 'warm' weather (it's only -9, -15 with the windchill).
